R Baker in Mito

A friend of ours had been urging us to try this fairly new bakery/cafe that was just down the street. We decided to stop by for brunch one day.

The inside of the bakery was really nice. It had a clean and modern style with lots of bright lighting. There were a number of different seating arrangements that could accommodate individuals as well as groups of any size. There were a plentiful amount of electrical plugs to cater to people studying and working.

R Baker Menu

The breakfast and brunch menu revolved around their morning plates which ended at 11:00 in the morning. They had a couple of varieties to choose from. Starting at 11:00 they had a lunch menu of pastas, curries, and hamburgers. They also had a an extensive drink menu with this really informative visual.

To order, we chose two morning plates one with bacon and egg and another one with a croque monsieur toast. We also added a mango juice at a cost of ¥100. We recommend adding a drink to your morning plate as an a la carte mango juice is ¥320.

R Baker Bakery

The bakery portion of R Baker included two well lit and completely enclosed display shelves as well as some side tables. They had a nice variety of sweet and savory bakery items to choose from. There were trays and tongs near the entrance and we used them to pick which pastries we wanted.

The actual bakery portion of bakery was open for everyone to see. It provided a nice visual seeing the bakery staff take the freshly baked pastries out of the oven and put them directly on the display racks.

We picked up a strawberry frosted donut, a bacon and maitake mushroom roll, and a crispy bacon and mushroom flatbread. We ate them later. The strawberry frosted donut was wonderful. The outer ring of the donut had a nice crispy texture that complimented the not too sweet strawberry flavor of the frosting. The maitake mushroom roll was great. It had a light soy based sauce that complimented the natural flavor of the maitake mushrooms and bacon. The crispy bacon and mushroom flatbread was delicious as well. The melted cheese combined with the mushrooms and bacon was a wonderful combination.

R Baker Food Review

The morning plates looked great. The first plate came with a toasted piece of toast, a fried sunny side up egg, a strip of bacon, a small side salad, and some yogurt with a blueberry sauce. The plate was simple yet delicious. We used the toast to clean up the runny egg yolk. The other morning plate included a croque monsieur toast with a side of French fries, a side salad, and some yogurt with a blueberry sauce. The croque monsieur toast was quite rich with its cheese & savory spread. The French fries were super thin and had a nice crispy texture. The yogurt was really sour, but the sweet blueberry sauce made it palatable. The mango juice was amazing. It had a thick texture and was full of mango flavor.

When our food was ready we went up to the counter to retrieve our trays. They had a self service area for condiments and utensils. We brought the trays back to our table. R Baker employs a moderate amount of self service into their business model. Guests are expected to bring their own food from the counter, and bring their trays back to the return area upon finishing. This likely helps keep their labor costs down and transfers some responsibility back to the customer.
