Gyoza Fukurai is conveniently located, just down the street from Mito City Hall and Station. The restaurant resembles a mom and pop version of Gyoza no Ohsho which is known for its tasty and affordable food.

The inside of the restaurant is pretty basic with a good amount of tables and chairs. There is also a wrap around bar for single guests or couples. They have a handful of parking spaces located directly in front of the restaurant.
Gyoza Fukurai Menu

The menu had an extensive array of Chinese dishes to choose from. They were known for their lunch and dinner sets which featured a lot of food at affordable prices. They also had a lot of appetizers and small plates to choose from. There was a special menu to display their most popular side dishes. We decided to order family style so we could try a lot of different dishes.
We ordered a black fried rice set and a chuka set to share. Each of the sets came with a side of their namesake gyoza, soup, salad, and a small side of pickled vegetables. Priced at under ¥1,000 each, they are popular menu items. We also got the cashew chicken, fried pepper squid, steamed shrimp dumplings, peach shaped manju buns, and sesame balls.
Gyoza Fukurai Food Review

First to come out were our two set meals. The black fried rice had nice flavor and wasn’t dry. The gyoza were pan fried with a nice crisp on the bottom. The inside was hot, juicy, and had a nice balance of onion and garlic. The chuka set was delicious. The savory brown sauce completely covered the vegetables, shrimp, and mushrooms. The set meals are by far the greatest value for your money.

Next to come out was the cashew chicken and the fried pepper squid. The cashew chicken was tasty. It had a generous amount of cashews and the chicken was tender and juicy. Surprisingly, our favorite dish was the fried pepper squid. Typically, we’re pretty neutral on squid. Its definitely not our favorite, but we don’t hate it. This dish has made us rethink that. The squid was fried to perfection. It was light and crispy on the outside. When we bit into it, there was no chewy or rubbery texture at all. The fried black and red peppers gave it a little kick. We highly recommend trying it.

The shrimp dumplings and peach shaped manju buns came in traditional bamboo steamers. The shrimp dumplings were delicious, the filling had good flavor and the shrimp was well grounded and smooth. The peach shaped manju buns were our least favorite part of the meal. They were soft, but the bean paste inside was too dry and had a crumbly texture. We likely won’t get them again.
The sesame balls were the last to come out. They had a nice crisp on the outside and the liquified black sesame on the inside was wonderful.
Final Thoughts
It was a special occasion, so we decided to go big. We got a lot of extra dishes in addition to our normal meal. In the future, when we come back, we’re likely to stick with one of their affordable set options. The food at Gyoza Fukurai in Mito was wonderful. Every dish we had was good. Our favorites were the crispy pepper squid, shrimp dumplings, and black fried rice. If your looking for a delicious and affordable meal near Mito City Hall or Mito Station, then we highly recommend Gyoza Fukurai in Mito.
