We were getting a little hungry during our New Year’s Road Trip, so we decided to stop for lunch at Roadside Station Nango in Miyazaki. The roadside station was located on the eastern coast of Miyazaki Prefecture along National Route 448. The roadside station was set on a coastal hill and had unobstructed views of the bay below.

Roadside Station Nango Restaurant

We parked the car and headed over to the restaurant in the main building. The menu of the restaurant featured a good assortment of seafood bowls and curry as well as the usual udon and soba options. Since we were on the coast, we decided to try some of their seafood bowls. We ordered marinated tuna & red snapper sashimi bowls.

There was a good amount of seating inside with self service drink and utensil stations. The weather was nice, so we decided to have lunch outside on the patio. The views from the patio were spectacular. A little while later, our food was ready and we went inside to pick it up.

Both of our sashimi bowls were delicious. The fish was fresh and the marinade was flavorful without being overpowering. The excess sauce had seeped into the rice making it delicious as well. After finishing up, we returned our trays to the counter and decided to check out the omiyage shops.

Roadside Station Nango Local Products Store

The omiyage shop was separated into two different buildings. The cash registers were located in the main building next to the restaurant, while a large amount of the goods were in a separate building.

As expected there was a good amount of mango related goods for sale. Unfortunately, it wasn’t mango season, so there were no actual mangos for sale. They did have a few bags of citrus, but most of it had already been picked over. We learned later that the roadside station was known for their Nango Roll which was a roll cake with mango brulee. The Nango Roll was only sold at Roadside Station Nango. We didn’t know about it at the time, but we’re excited to try it the next time we go.

The parking at the roadside station was limited to 44 car parking spots and 2 spots for larger trucks or buses. The parking was separated into a main lot and a side lot. The back side of the side lot did provide a decent amount of privacy. We could see ourselves spending a night in the car here. The restrooms were 24 hours and located in a separate standalone building.

Unique features of the Roadside Station include its close proximity to the Jacaranda forest, Ocean Square open area, and the Mt. Tyawan Observation Deck. We were particularly interested in the Mt. Tyawan Observation Deck which was located across the street from the roadside station. It looked like a short hike and we were curious how nice the view was.

Final Thoughts

In the future, we’d like to explore some of the nature spots around Roadside Station Nango in Miyazaki. The views of the bay were beautiful. We can imagine that the sun rising in the east makes a particularly beautiful scene. We look forward to going back in the future.
