Onyasai Shabu Shabu in Mito

We decided to come to Onyasai Shabu Shabu in Mito for a friends birthday. The restaurant was conveniently located off of National Route 50 in an easily accessible and high traffic area of Mito. Onyasai is a massive chain restaurant with over 220 locations located throughout Japan.

The interior of restaurant was really nice with its clean and simple style. Most of the seating was semi private booths that were sectioned off with movable dividers. The dividers could be lowered or raised to accommodate a wide variety of group sizes.

Onyasai Menu

The menu at Onyasai revolves around their namesake shabu shabu. The restaurant recommends one of their all you can eat courses. There are a number of courses that guests can choose from. Each of the tiers include various types of meats. The highest tiers include the exclusive ingredients and premium meats. Our friends recommended the tan shabu course with pork tongue being the highlight. The course had 12 different meats to choose from.

Note: If your not interested in all you can eat, most items can be ordered a la carte.

In addition to the meats, there is a plentiful selection of fresh seasonal vegetables, something the Onyasai Shabu Shabu is known for. Other menu items include a large assortment of side dishes and other shabu shabu ingredients like noodles.

Onyasai Shabu Shabu Review

After choosing our course, we got to choose two different broths. They had a good selection to choose from. We ended up going with the wagyu dashi and soy milk broths.

Once our broth was lightly boiling we threw in a bunch of the meat and vegetables we had just ordered. We tried most of the meats at least once, before finding our favorites. By the end we just cycled between the pork tongue and shabu beef. The meats came in these stackable containers. There were approximately four super thin slices of meat in each one. It was very satisfying going through an entire stack of trays. Both the meat and vegetables were delicious. The tasty broth absorbed nicely into the ingredients.

All the ordering is done through the tablet. There is very little interaction with the staff other than when they bring you your food.

Note: At anytime you can request more broth for your shabu shabu pots.

The tan course that we ordered included one dessert. We made our choices and inputted the order into the tablet. We decided to share, which meant we got to try all four. The pistachio ice cream was our favorite.

Final Thoughts

The shabu shabu at Onyasai in Mito was wonderful. It’s a little on the pricier side and generally speaking has fewer menu items compared to other all you can eat shabu shabu places. However, the quality of the meat does feel higher at Onyasai. It’s not somewhere we would go to on a regular basis, but for special events, its a nice treat. If you’re looking for a nice mid tier shabu shabu restaurant, then we recommend Onyasai Shabu Shabu in Mito.
