We got off the bus at Echigo Yuzawa Station. We were getting a little hungry so we decided to look for dinner. The station was pretty packed. It looked like a lot of day trippers with their gear all packed in protective cases. We had to weave our way through them. We were looking for a hot meal, so we decided to explore the stations options. After looking around for a bit, we decided to try Uonuma no Hatake in Yuzawa. It was conveniently located along the restaurant street inside Echigo Yuzawa Station.

After about a five minute wait we got a table. The restaurant is pretty large and has a good amount of tables. The restaurant is famous for their oyakudon (chicken, egg, and onion over rice).

Uonuma no Hatake in Menu

After looking over the menu we ordered the oyakudon (chicken, egg, and onion over rice) and sakeikuradon (salmon, salmon eggs, and egg over rice). We learned from their menu that they used locally sourced koshihikari rice from Minami Uonuma’s Shiozara district. Koshihikari is one of the best types of rice in Japan. One of the most famous growing regions was located just one town to the north.

Uonuma no Hatake Food Review

Our food came out a little while later. We really liked the presentation of the oyakudon. It was placed in a beautiful lacquer bowl. A matching lid on top helped to retain the heat. Lifting the lid releases a plume of steam. The aroma of the food was wonderful.

The food itself was delicious. The oyakudon with its slightly raw eggs really absorbed the sauce well. The chicken and onions were tender and had good texture. The excess sauce and eggs flavored the rice underneath nicely.

The sakeikuradon was good as well. There was a generous amount of salmon and salmon roe. The salmon was flakey and the salmon roe’s salty flavor was a nice addition. Both of our meals also came with a side of pickles and a bowl of hot miso soup.

Final Thoughts

The bill came out to a little over ¥1,200/person which wasn’t bad considering we were in a resort town. If your looking for a hot meal in Echigo Yuzawa Station, then we recommend Uonuma no Hatake in Yuzawa for its delicious food, reasonable prices, and convenient location.
