The Little Bakery in Shibuya

On a recent trip to Shibuya, we went to this cute café/bakery. The shop we wanted to go to in Shibuya did not open until 11:00. We had a little bit of time to spare, so we decided to look for a breakfast place in the area. We searched Google Maps and found The Little Bakery. They opened at 10:00 and there was already a small line when we arrived at 9:45. The bakery was located just south of the intersection between the Tokyo Metropolitan Roads 305 & 413. It was a super popular shopping district with lots of brand name shops in the area. We took a side road off of Cat Street and found it nestled amongst mixed retail and residential buildings.

The theme of the café/bakery was American diner. They had a good amount of old style American memorabilia and were playing classic American music in the background. The front part of the space housed the bakery portion which was self serve pastries laid out in a very artistic and trendy fashion. Behind a central bar area was a good amount of densely packed tables where we could enjoy our pastries.

The Little Bakery’s Bakery

Upon first walking in we were greeted with a plethora of freshly baked pastries. We had a difficult time choosing as everything looked so good. They also had a refrigerated section with a bunch of yummy looking cakes and drinks. Last but not least was the donut display. They had over 20 varieties to choose from and many with unique flavors that we hadn’t seen before. We ended up going with a bakers muffin, chocolate chip cookie, and Sicilia Lemon Poppy Seed donut. We paid for the pastries and sat in their seating area behind the counter. They asked us if we wanted them heated up and we agreed.

The Little Bakery Pastry Review

A little while later, they brought our pastries out on this beautiful tree cookie. The presentation was wonderful.

We started off with the Baker’s Muffin. It was crispy and flakey on the outside and super soft and fluffy on the inside. One interesting point about the muffin was that instead of being one singular piece, the muffin was actually a collection of dozens and dozens of small pieces. The batter had likely been formed into many little balls and then baked together. The result was a muffin that could easily be broken up and eaten in perfect bite size pieces. It was unique and the powdered sugar added just the right touch of sweetness.

Next, we went for the Sicilia Lemon Poppy Seed donut. It was absolutely delicious. The Sicilia Lemon frosting on top was perfect. It had a subtly lemon flavor and was sweet, but not too sweet. The donut itself was super fluffy and soft. The taste was kind of like a really lite lemon bar. We highly recommend.

The chocolate cookie was pretty disappointing. It was super dry. It had been heated up, so the chocolate was in a semi-solid state, but it didn’t make a difference, Every bite just sucked all the moisture our of our mouths. By the second bite we needed to get some water as our mouths were completely dried out. We were really surprised as the other two pastries were delicious.

Note: The Little Bakery had a number of vegan pastries to choose from.

Final Thoughts

It took a lot of restraint on our part to not get too many things. Everything looked so good and we can’t wait to go back and try more of their donuts and pastries. The prices were a little on the high side, which could have been attributed to its location in Tokyo and more specifically Shibuya, or the fact that its a boutique café/bakery. It’s not something we would get all the time, but for special trips/occasions its perfect. We highly recommend The Little Bakery in Shibuya for its delicious donuts and pastries.
