Sushi Dai in Toyosu

We were going to check out the Toyosu fish market and wanted to have an early lunch. We did some research and decided on Sushi Dai in Toyosu for its high reviews on Google.

Based on the reviews we were a little worried that there would be a long line. We were surprised to find no line at all. The inside of the shop was pretty small with about a dozen or so sushi bar seats. Our sushi chef was super friendly and accommodated us as best he could with his broken English. We went with the omakase course which included a chef’s selection of 10 sushi plus one of our choosing. The chef handmade each of our sushi and placed it on our black plate.

Sushi Review

For starters we were given a bowl of miso soup and this fluffy steamed egg cake with green onion.

Our first sushi were a flounder with salt on top, Spanish Mackerel with a soy marinade topped with green onions, and the fatty tuna. We liked how the chef explained each one in detail and instructed us on how to best enjoy it.

Next, came the horse mackerel with a soy marinade topped with ginger and onions, shellfish with a soy marinade, and cooked abalone. We really liked the twists that the chef added to make each sushi unique and flavorful.

Our next grouping was the lean tuna with a soy marinade topped with wasabi, cutlass fish with a soy marinade topped with oroshi daikon and green onions, tuna roll, and cucumber with shellfish roll. In between pieces our chef engaged us in small talk. The chefs of the other guests would also chime in and play off each others conversations. It was a very lively atmosphere that kept things engaging and interactive.

Our second to last sushi was a warm sea eel with a soy marinade. For our last sushi we were given a choice. We were given a menu with English translations to choose from. I’m a pretty big fan of shrimp, so I decided to go with the raw prawn. It did not disappoint. It was probably the freshest shrimp I’d ever had. The shrimp was so fresh that it was still twitching on the plate. In addition they gave us the head that had been fried in a soy based sauce. Typically, I don’t eat the head or shell of the shrimp. However, it was super tasty and crunchy to the point where I couldn’t even tell it was a shrimp head.

Final Thoughts

Wow! What a meal. Probably the best sushi we’ve ever had in Japan. We were really impressed with the variety of flavors and subtle additions the sushi chief added. They all enhanced and brought out the natural flavor of the fish. It was nice not having to order pieces individually. We definitely got to try a number of new sushi that we had never known about. It was a little expensive at ¥4,900 per person, but definitely worth it. We would highly recommend Sushi Dai in Toyosu to anyone who would like to try the best sushi in Japan.

    1. Unfortunately, they do not accept reservations. They operate on a first come first serve basis. We went on a weekday at 7:30 am and only had to wait 10 minutes. Good Luck.
