Senryo Sushi in Mito

We came to Senryo Sushi in Mito after getting a recommendation and invite from a friend. We learned that they were affiliated with Genki Sushi which also operated the kaiten (revolving) sushi chain Uobei. It was located off a major road in close proximity to the university. We knew that Senryo with its open sushi kitchen and made to order concept was going to be more pricy. We were curious to see how much more expensive the bill would be.

Senryo Sushi Pricing

During our informal calculations we found that most items had been marked up anywhere from 0 to 250 percent. Some of the super basic items like the cucumber roll and inari sushi had retained their standard Uobei prices of ¥100 + tax. Others like the tuna roll and a number of the nigiri had seen at least a 100% increase in price. Going from ¥100 + tax to ¥200 + tax.

They also had a much more extensive menu that included things like baked salmon skin, uni, and many others.

Senryo Sushi Review

Our first order was a four piece tuna set. One thing that we noticed immediately was the thickness of the fish. Compared with other kaiten sushi restaurants, the cuts of fish at Senryo were noticeably thicker. The fish also tasted fresher, had a better flavor, and a more substantial texture. The tuna set came with four different pieces that represented different parts of the fish. The pieces varied in how much fat content they possessed. I generally prefer a leaner cut which was the second from the right, but I’ve come to appreciate the fattier cuts.

For our next course we moved on to the salmon. Once again the salmon was cut thick and very fresh. The mayo salmon had good flavor. We really liked how the hot mayo sauce contrasted with the cool piece of salmon. The plain salmon was super fresh and had melt in your mouth qualities.

We got a couple of our go to tuna rolls as a bit of a filler. The fish was not noticeably different from other kaiten sushi restaurants. There was a 100% mark up on these compared to other kaiten sushi shops. The price went from ¥100 + tax to ¥200 + tax.

Our friend recommended getting the salmon skin, so we decided to give it a try. It was really delicious and did not disappoint. There was a thin layer of salmon on top of the skin. The skin was nice and crispy and the salmon was super juicy. The oil from the skin and the salty soy glaze were a great combination. The most surprising thing was the price. It was only around ¥150 + tax. We really enjoyed it and ordered a few more.

Final Thoughts

We were pretty shocked when the bill came out to roughly the same amount that we normally would have spent at a kaiten sushi restaurant. The biggest difference for us between Senryo Sushi in Mito and other kaiten sushi shops like Uobei and Hama Sushi was our price consciousness. When we’re at Uobei or Hama Sushi, we never have to look at prices. If something looks good, we can try it without having to think twice. When at Senryo, we don’t feel the same way. Some of the sushi can be in the ¥700 + range which puts them a little out of reach for our bi-monthly sushi trip. If someone invites us to go to Senryo, we would go. I’m not sure we would go just on our own. Especially when Hama Sushi is our go to favorite.
