We were looking for a place to stay around Echigo Yuzawa Station when we found this place. It was a hostel with both shared and private rooms. The hostel was located on the northern side of the station which was considerably more quiet than the southern side. The hostel was located only a five minute walk from Echigo Yuzawa Station. Since most of the local ski resorts could be accessed by bus from the station, the hostels location was quite convenient. In addition, most of the way was under a covered walkway which helped keep the sidewalks clear of snow.
The reviews on TripAdvisor & Google Maps were very positive, so we were pretty confident in our decision.
Sansan Yuzawa Backpackers Room Review

We got to the hostel and checked in without any problems. The receptionist was really nice and walked us through the hostels amenities and features. We got the key to our room and headed to the second floor. We reserved a private room. The room was nice sized and had tatami flooring with a green carpet on top . It was six tatami which was a little over 100 sq.ft.. The futon pads were thick and comfortable and the comforter and extra blankets were more than warm enough. There was also a space heater which we did utilize.
Sansan Yuzawa Backpackers Breakfast Review

We were offered the choice to buy a breakfast for an additional fee which we accepted. It was just okay. There was a nice variety, but everything was a little salty. We were satisfied with the quality and quantity, but its not something we’re likely to get again.
Sansan Yuzawa Backpackers Amenities
On the third floor there was a shared space with a couple of desks, a comfy couch, a large kotatsu table, communal refrigerator, microwave, and water heater. We ate our breakfast there with some of the other guests.
The bathrooms, sinks, and showers were down the hall from our room. It was a little inconvenient, but expected from a budget hostel accommodation. The bathrooms were clean, modern, and had the bidet functions. The showers were a little small, but were clean and comfortable.
On the first floor there was a small café and lounge area where the staff and other guests could interact with each other. It looked like a relaxing area with the typical “hostel vibe” where you could meet other like minded travelers from all over the world. Unfortunately, we were a little strapped for time and were unable to stop by. In the future when we travel at a more leisure pace, we’d like to spend more time at these places.

At the reception they had these cute little wooden cat figures in a variety of colors. We decided to pick one up on the way out.
Final Thoughts
If your looking for a budget accommodation in close proximity to Echigo Yuzawa Station, then we highly recommend Sansan Yuzawa Backpackers. The prices especially for single travelers in a gender specific shared dormitory were very reasonable. It’s probably one of the most affordable accommodations in Yuzawa. We would also recommend this place to solo travelers or anyone else looking to interact with other guests and locals. As its name would imply Sansan Yuzawa Backpackers was also known as a way point for hikers/backpackers. We heard that the area was a popular destination for summer outdoor activities like hiking and camping. In the future we would like to return to Yuzawa in the summer and try some of the local hiking trails.
