While on a trip to the Okutama Area of Tokyo, we unknowingly crossed the border into Yamanashi Prefecture. Kosuge was a small town nestled in the mountains. It was known for its hiking, camping, and rainbow trout fishing. We decided to stop by Roadside Station Kosuge in Yamanashi since it was also the location of Forest Adventure Kosuge.

Restaurant Genryu

After a fun time navigating the obstacle courses and zip lining through the trees we stopped for lunch. The roadside station had one main sit down restaurant which was called Genryu. There were also a couple of food stalls outside with a good amount of outdoor seating. We were surprised to find that the restaurants theme was Italian food.

The menu consisted of pizzas, pastas, anti-pastas, and desserts. They also had a separate menu for alcoholic beverages. We looked over the menu and decided to split the seasonal vegetable pizza and a side of mushrooms. We ordered and paid for our food from a sophisticated digital vending machine.

The interior of the restaurant was pretty big with a number of tables and booths. They had a large pizza oven in the center as well as a replica in the entryway. We took a table in the center that had a nice view of the surrounding mountains.

The mushrooms had been prepackaged and were brought out immediately. They were marinated in a vinegar type sauce which had a bit of a kick to it. Our pizza came out a short time later. The pizza was really big. We’re glad that we decided to share one. The pizza was delicious. It was a thin crust pizza with a light amount of tomato sauce and a good variety of vegetables. The toppings included, tomatoes, spinach, eggplant, and slices of bacon. The slices of pizza were a little weak towards the end, so we had to implement a fold to keep everything together. Typically, we’re not fans of eggplant and tomatoes, but this pizza was delicious.

After lunch, we went outside and ordered a mixed soft serve of shining muscat and vanilla. We ordered from a vending machine and gave our ticket to the clerk. The shining muscat flavor was delicious and the creaminess from the vanilla really enhanced it. We liked the design of the cone which was shaped in a way to limit the amount of dripping. We finished up the cone and headed over to the local products store.

The local products store had a large selection of locally produced goods as well as souvenirs. On display were a large amount of shining muscat grapes which Yamanashi Prefecture was famous for. They had a variety of price points which were all very affordable compared to what we would find at the super market. We got a bunch of shining muscat grapes as well as a flying squirrel key chain which was the mascot of Kosuge town. The shining muscat grapes were sweet and juicy. Our only regret is that we didn’t get more.

The bathroom facilities were clean, but they were a bit small and dated.

Final Thoughts

From an overnight perspective, Roadside Station Kosuge in Yamanashi was a dream location. There was a good amount of parking and best of all, there was an onsen called Kosuge-no-Yu across the street. Kosuge-no-Yu closed at 18:00 with the last reception at 17:20. Similarly, the Local Products Store also closed at 18:00. While this was a little early, we are firm believers of starting and ending the day early. It gives us more flexibility on the backend.
