Pension Arumeria in Wakkanai

We had just finished up visiting Cape Soya & Japan’s northernmost point. We were getting a little tired, so we decided to start looking for a place to spend the night. Pension Arumeria in Wakkanai stood out for its high average reviews on Google.

Pension Arumeria was located along a rural section of National Route 238 about halfway between Wakkanai City & Cape Soya. It had a modest 17 rooms of varying configurations meant for one to two people. The innkeeper was a kind elderly lady. Based on pictures we saw it looked like the place had been run by her family for a long time.

Upon entering, we asked the innkeeper if they had any rooms available. We were pleased to find that they had a room available. The rate for two people with no meals was reasonable so we decided to go for it. The views from the main lobby were breathtaking.

Pension Arumeria Room

We made our way to our room on the second floor. The room was small and compact, with a separate room for the bathroom. The bed was basic and the linens were a bit dated, but it was comfortable enough.

The highlight was a full size sliding glass door that led to a semi private deck. The deck overlooked the water and we were able to watch the sunset from the comfort of our room.

For dinner, we got back in the car and backtracked for three minutes to the local Seico Mart convenience store. We loaded up on a couple of entrees, sides, and drinks before heading back to our room. After dinner, we took a quick bath in the downstairs public bath. We went to bed pretty early and fell asleep with the gentle sound of the waves in the background. We woke up the next day feeling refreshed.

Pension Arumeria Amenities

Amenities included a small public bath with a handful of washing stations and a small indoor only bath. There is also a nice seating area near the reception desk where guests can relax and enjoy the views of the ocean.

Accessed from the second floor via a ladder, there was a small observation deck on the third floor that gave panoramic views of the area.

Final Thoughts

If your in the Wakkanai area or on your way to Japan’s Northernmost point, we highly recommend spending a night at Pension Arumeria. We didn’t get a chance to try the food, but it looked delicious. Pension Arumeria in Wakkanai is an affordable lodging with breathtaking sunset views. The views alone were worth the rate.
