During a recent trip to Fukuroda Falls we stopped for lunch at Mukashi-ya in Daigo. The area is known for there soba and konjac, so we knew that we wanted to try some. The shop was located just off of the main street leading up to the falls. We noticed it on the way up since there was a nice sized line in front of the shop.

The exterior of the building was a nice cream color with extensive black trim and accents. We really liked the traditional look of the building. Wooden signs hanging on the wall displayed the restaurants name in a nice bold font. Just outside the building there was a small waiting area and a non functioning waterwheel. The interior was a mix of the same cream colored walls with black trim, accents, and ceiling. The restaurant also had a small shop outside that sold konjac and there yuzu miso sauce.

Inside the restaurant was pretty small, but they managed to squeeze in two long rows of tables and chairs. The chairs were pretty dense, so they were able to fit in quite a few parties at an given time. When we stopped by after our trip to the falls, the line had shrunk considerably. After a short 10 minute wait we were ushered to our seats.
Mukashi-ya Menu
The menu was pretty simple with soba being the main theme. We ended up going with the Okukuji jidori soba and a side of the yuzu miso konjac. The restaurant had an interesting policy of having customers pay right after we ordered our food.
Mukashi-ya Food Review

The yuzu miso konjac came skewered on a small plate with some nice natural foliage. The konjac by itself seemed pretty normal. The miso glaze was quite heavy and had a really strong flavor. The yuzu peel slices also had quite a strong flavor. The combination of the strong salty flavor with the strong citrus flavor was a little much. We’d say it was just okay. Its worth trying once, but not something we would go out of our way to get again.

A little while later the soba came out. It was placed on a beautiful white and black plate. The soba was elevated on a bamboo mat. The plate also featured a beautiful autumn leaf and some vegetable sides. There was also a bowl of piping hot soba dipping sauce. The sauce had good flavor and contrasted nicely with the cold soba. We tried a sip of the sauce and it was super salty. However, when we dipped the soba, it got just the right amount of sauce. We really enjoyed the soba, which had a very chewy and seemingly elastic texture.
Final Thoughts
We’re glad that we stopped by Mukashi-ya in Daigo for lunch. The soba with dipping sauce was very delicious. At 1,450 for just the soba, it was pretty expensive considering what we got. However the location was prime, so we expected some level of tourism surge pricing. The yuzu miso konjac had a little too strong of a taste for us, but nevertheless were happy we tried it. When we come back we’ll get the soba again and try a couple more of there side dishes.
